Welcome to Eco Scholars

Applications Have Closed

San Antonio’s Solid Waste Management Department and Office of Sustainability will be awarding $1M in grants to local schools, public and private. This program is designed to support the city’s Climate Action and Adaptation Plan (CAAP) goals.

Schools must propose a project, program or product that will directly affect climate change, reduction of greenhouse gases, or other sustainability issues such as water and energy conservation. If the application is accepted, 50% of the funds will be available immediately as seed money for supplies and other expenses to begin the project. Grants can be $3,000, $5,000, or up to $10,000 based on the scope of the project and its projected positive results or impact.

The remaining 50% will be available at the completion of the project. At least half of the grant must be used on the project. If the project’s expenses are less than the total grant, the remaining money may be used for other purposes that improve the education experience and environment. These would include student and classroom supplies, new equipment, repairs, uniforms, student nutrition and health and scholarships. A specific activity must be stated in the application. Unapproved activities would include social events, travel or existing general operation and overhead expenses.

If a school already has a sustainability program or project, the grant application must state how the funds will improve, enhance and expand the existing project. The funds cannot be used to just support or maintain it. Schools are allowed to submit more than one project. Each project requires a separate application.

Projects must be completed by the end of 2023-2024 school year. Quarterly progress reports are required but are simple in nature such as uploading photos or videos. Schools must register as a City vendor for the transfer of funds to occur. That form is located here.
